Does anyone know who played steel for, Carl Smith's recording, Hey Joe, around 1954-55. Jim Goins.

Johnny Seibert (sp) was inducted into the steel guitar hall of fame. Had the pleasure of meeting him at his induction at the ISGA.

Here's a good video of the song. Looks like Johnny is playing the 6th neck of a push/pull with 8 strings.

I counted endplate screws and there are ten of them.

Hmm... I always thought it was Chalker. You learn something new every day.

Chalker had hair - big hair. Laughing

I always admired Carl for keeping Johnny so long. I guess they were both pretty happy with the situation, as very few big stars have ever kept the same steel player for more than 10 years. Neutral

Craig, If you look closely about 2:20 you'll see 2 strings missing, I think. Norm

About April 1969, Carl Smith released "Good Deal Lucille" with Chalker. Jim Murphy also did some sessions on the steel and sax. for Carl Smith's 20th anniversary double album.

Several of Carl's Columbia labums in the 1960s have twin steel guitars, both Chalker and Siebert were playing on the same tracks.

Kind Regards, Walter

Marco,
You could very well be correct.
I was just going by what Carl Smith said to Roy Acuff.

Thanks for the input, I found on Wikipedia, Carl recorded, Hey Joe May, 1953 it spent 8 weeks #1 0n Country Radio charts, I think this was before pedal steel, sounds like lap steel, I didn't find out the steel player. Confused. Jim Goins.

It was definitely Johnny Siebert. This was verified in his obituary when he died in 2013.
