Got this Morgan Monroe electric mandolin a few weeks ago. Took all 8 strings off and put on 4 new strings and kept it tuned to E, A, D ,G. The tone is a bit bright. On the recording below the 1st and last verses are on the bridge pickup and the middle verses on the neck and bridge combined in phase.

All the pedal steel (Excel 12 string), mandolin and guitar parts were played through an Allen Encore amp using the amp reverb. The drummer was EZDrummer and the fiddle, organ and piano parts are from RealTracks real instruments.

I like it! Very Happy
I've got this Fender electric mandolin but I haven't done much with it.

I think at one time Fender made a 5 string mandolin.

Cool Greg. I have the same mandolin. I wanted the Telecaster look in a 5 string but this works fine. I will have to try it with 4 strings.

Larry, it will finger LOT easier with only 4 strings! I had to cut down the nut on mine to make it playable. Height at the first fret is now 0.010" on the high strings and 0.012" on the bottom two strings.

Thanks Gene! Don't play a lot anymore but like to keep my recording skills intact as I do some tracks for our church vocal group.

Thanks for the tip Greg. I will give it a try. What gauge string set are you using?

Here's some info on the low C 4 string set up like Johnny Gimble's if you prefer that:
