Are there any manufactures that are making pedal steel tuning keys with different ratios. My Mullen G2 has Grovers that came on it, but i wish what they did with one full rotation actually took about 3 rotations. I know it would be a bit more of a pain when stringing the whole steel, but i feel they jump past the sweet spots when tuning just a bit too fast.

Ricky, do you know that the ratio is on the standard Grovers that Mullen's use?

If you use a hand-held String-Winder to turn the key when you tune, you will get a much better ratio for fine tuning. |

Gordon; I'm pretty sure original Grovers are 14:1. But you may have to ask Mullen what ratio they use...as I haven't a clue about specifics of any other pedal steels than the Sho~bud.
I like the 18:1 as it fine tunes better...meaning it turns the post slower ratio.

Like Ricky states 1:18 Tuners are great.
I had trouble with 2 or 3 of the original tuners on a 1974 MSA, So I replaced all of them. I ordered 1:18 Grover Tuners.
What a job it turned into. The new Tuners had a 10 MM shafts that went through the key heads. I had to drill out all 10 tuner holes to fit the new Tuners. Then when it got down the little retainer screws, The screw heads would not clear the gear box. Simple Chuck the screw into my miniature lathe and turn the head down. Screw was a hardened self tapping screw, Broke tip off lathe bit. Had to run each screw in lathe and grind each head down with a grinder tool in a Dremel Tool.
The replacement solved the problem tuners and made for easier precise tuning. But was a very much longer job than I planned for.
I wonder if Grover went international and changed to metric measurements.
Check and measure close before you start.
Good Luck if you do, And Happy Steelin |
