I have been a huge paycheck fan, my whole life. I was raised on it. I just recently inquired an album of him playing live at Gillys , and all I can say is wow big Murph killed it. Like always. I’m wondering if any of you guys have any of his instrumental stuff? I always wanted to hear him play a tune called my “My mother’s eyes “. Based off of previous post about him, I’ve read a lot, but never got to hear it. Do any of you guys have it in mind sharing? Love his playing ! Lighting fast, falling off into these big jazz chords, even playing a good ol shuffle song. CRAZY ! |

Jim was so good. My Mother's Eyes is a great tune, also featuring Jim's great sax playing!
if you haven't seen it, check out this killer footage of Jim with Redd Volkaert:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7n6jcSP06w&t=1775s
here's some great video of Jim with Paycheck too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94nNyutXuF0
somewhere I've got a live recording of Jim with the Vassar Clements Band too. just a couple of monsters.
I met Jim once when he was working with Hank III. he played nothing but lap steel and blew the roof off the place. he was a real sweetheart of a guy too. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

I saw Murph with Vasser Clements in San Francisco. Beyond awesome.
Then in 1983, while my band was in Nashville for a week doing one of those nationwide battle of the bands, we were invited to go play a set at this club. The band basically was staffed with road players that were off the road (or so the front man said). Big Jim was the steel player. A little un-nerving playing in front of Jim. Nicest guy in the world. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, NV400, NV112 . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

You can see from that Live Video of Johnny Paycheck....that Murph was playing this Sho~bud Pro II Custom I'm sitting behind below. It has the "interesting leaf" on the front of it..ah..ha....it was a Sho~bud the late Dick Miller refinished special for Big Jim Murphy....as when Murph moved here to Austin those last years of his life...he let me have and set up and tweek all his steels for him through the years....a lot of great memories; that I hold close to my heart.

Ricky, Dick Miller got together with Terry Bethel and built Bethel Steels. Thought I saw the name Bethel on that Sho Bud in the video. Maybe I'm just seeing things. |

It was a Bethel in that first video. He must have put that symbol on all of his guitars. |

Yes Keith the first video with Redd....Murph was playing his Bethel and yes it has his classic Leaf symbol on it; and the second video of him playing with Paycheck; that is the Sho~bud Pro II with the original leaf symbol...ha...I didn't know Dick did the finish on his Bethel; but that does make sense...as that video of Murph with Paycheck was from 1981....so when he had the Bethel made that symbol followed him...and so you are saying that was D. miller that followed him....ha......

J R ; all of Big Jim's musical equipment went to his family that I have no contact with; so I have no clue where that Pro II or the other Steels I worked on for Murph. Here's one below that originally was built for Doug J; but Doug turned it in after first year and it was redone for Murph; then I go ahold of it and restored it for Murph as he got to play it last few years of his life>
...and here is Big Jim Murphy's set up....UNREAL and I loved it.
RIP Big Jim.

In about ‘75 or’76 I saw Paycheck with Murph in Seminole, Ok at the Circle W Corral. Ah man he killed it. I was just knocked out. On one break we went out to the bus and took advantage of the aforementioned leaf. He was totally nuts on steel. the good ole days. Johnny came on the bus to tell Jim it was time to play, Murph said he was busy talking, 😂. WOW what a night. _________________ Keep pickin', Larry |
