I need help. I have a carter starter i have not played for a while.when i set it up i get a very weak signal to the amp. i have to turn amp up almost all the way to hear much of anything.guitar worked when i put it in the closet. I cleaned all the contacts, switched cord, different amps, no pedal. same results. HELP! |

The pickup should have a resistance between 7K and 200K on a digital meter. If the resistance is a lot higher the pickup may be bad or corrosion on the connections might cause the same thing. If the guitar has a volume pot or resistor on the 1/4 in phone plug that may be the issue.
Measure the resistance across the two wires from the pickup Nothing plugged in.

I think Barry meant 7K and 20K. |
