Changer dirty. What should I use to clean it?

| Look really thoroughly for a broken off string end wedged in there. Use a strong light and look from all angles. |

It looks kinda like the third string isn't centered over the top of the finger. I don't know if that would cause the problem, though.

I owe two BMI guitars and love them. Both are over 35 years old and still play perfectly today. I have removed one changer at a time simply by using a second changer shaft the same diameter as the original. Loosen the two screws that hold the changer axle. Then with the second axle slightly (very slightly) tapered on the end, lightly tap it through the changers until you reach the one you want to remove. Separate the two axle ends at the problem changer. Remove pull rods and springs. Changer should come out the bottom.
Watch for washers on each side of changer for reinstall. Make repairs and reverse process for reassembly. Like mentioned before good chance broken string end lodge in changer or pull rods bent causing changer misalignment .

Looks to me that the pull rod is pulling off to the side. To the front actually. They must run parallel to the guitar. If yes, move the bell crank it's connected to, closer to the back apron. Good luck. RP

| It looks like there is considerable wear in some of the fingers at the changer axle holes. As far as the bent finger, others are correct as to one possible cause, a string jammed in the changer. Other possible causes are overturning the guitar, or an impact on the tuning wrench when it's on the rod. |

Yup, the hole in the finger is worn out. And as Nicholas said, it's probably from the rod not pulling straight. As long as the slight string spacing difference doesn't bother you, you can just oil it and play it as is. Otherwise, it's tear-down time.  |
