Maybe I'm missing something but it
seems like most if not all the SD-10's that I've seen with
incredible lacquer finishes (or even nice mica) usually have black rear pads.
Color coordinated vinyl or even leather would sure be be sharp lookin'! Rolling Eyes

My Derby SD-10 is blue, with a coordinated blue pad.
I'm away at present, but will try and add a picture when I get back to the guitar.

Yes that was done by us. We did not tool the leather but took it from there. We use black because it can go with any color. With us building so many guitars we cannot stock over 30+ colors to match our mica finishes. However we will always help the customer get what they want, we have done numerous custom pads no doubt. Black is just the neutral match anything color..

Mike, call it the comic in me, but I'm half expecting someone to make a comment about that last picture...

"That pad looks too long and way too high."

Jay, I think the reason most builders use black, it goes with anything and everything.
But I will cover the pad with what ever color the customer wants on it. Very Happy

Here is one of Dave Wheelhouse's Sheffield guitars with a blue pad. I played it at his house this afternoon and it has magnificent tone.

Ken that Sheffield is beautiful u need that steel . Any body put a pad on a steel as beautiful as this one need’s to go see a shrink!!!!!! Hope they didn’t drill holes in that beautiful wood. That , world class steel. A pad my add a little class to one of my ugly steel builds. Maybe I’m kidding maybe not. Be like painting a beard on the monalisa!!! More I type The madder I get.🤪 a little humor god a long ways.

Please don’t get mad Johnnie. The guy who built this beauty - Dave Wheelhouse - built it for himself and he told me that he finds a pad more comfortable than leaving the rear of the cabinet pad-less so to speak. This guitar just sounds as stunning as it looks, and I have told Dave never to sell it. It just sounds superb, better than anything else of his that I’ve tried. He lives close to me and I usually get an early view of his latest creations. Very Happy
