It sounds like you are looking for the chords to The Major Scale.
I, iim, iiim, IV, V, Vim, Viidim I
For now just grab strings 4,5,6, and play...
In the Key of G:
3, 3C, 5C, 8, 10, 10C, 13F, 15
You can now extrapolate larger chords from there, knowing that there are 3 basic inversions for major and minor chords, and that diminished chords repeat themselves every three frets.
That G on fret-3 can also be 6AF or 10AB
That iim at fret 3C can also be fret 1 with E's lowered, or 8A.
You can grab any group or amount of strings you need to make the chord fit the song. |

Try playing chords using strings 3, 5 & 8, or 4, 6 & 10. The wide spacing of the intervals makes the steel sound large.
To move in the direction of jazzy sounds try adding a sixth interval to a major triad. So at the no pedals position add the second string lowered a whole tone. That gives you the sixth interval. Play that along with strings 6 & 5. You can also use the ninth string lowered a half tone to give you the sixth interval on the low end of the tuning. That sounds good when played with strings 6 & 5.
At the pedals down position reach up and include the first string in your chord. That's a sixth interval in the pedals down position. Or simply include the seventh string when playing the other normal strings of that position. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

I found this lesson from Jody Cameron pretty useful (I took it as the live seminar). It focuses on some uses for the 9th string that aren't obvious. Pretty cool stuff, and definitely some 'big chord' voicings come out of these ideas.
