This thread is so terse!
I don't have a horse in this race, but I'd love it George if you could share your experience a little more for my own personal edification.
Are there things you really like about each amp? Differences that appeal to you? Anything you don't like about either of them? |

Sorry to be "terse" hee, hee …
I like to read info but many time don't like to take the time to type it all out...hence terse..
But for you Josh here goes:
I'll go out on a limb and say we as steel guitarist are all searching for the "holy" "grail" of tone. I know it drives me more than a little.
I've played since 1978 and had every single steel guitar amp Peavey has ever produced, including the set up that Jeff and Buddy used in the early 80's ProFex into DPC 750 into two Tweed 115's Black widow cabinet, used this set up for the longest time.
Dr Z weighs more than 89
Dr Z feels more powerful
Dr Z has less controls and only one input and more ohnmic taps and a effects loop.
Dr z uses KT88s for power section and a different preamp section than the 89
cost less than 89
Dr Z seems to feel a little "brighter" which may be good for some guitars
89 uses 12ax7 pre amp section and 6L6 power tubes
has only one ohmic tap but has a direct out for send to pa if needed..
Ok both are very high build quality that I'm sure will provide years of service and be serviceable..
The 89 feels a bit more musical to me maybe because of different overtones if there is such a thing, and the Dr Z is a little less, maybe.. certainly will react differently for each player.
You don't see very often either of these amps for sale here on the SGF not that this is the only barometer but a reasonable platform.
I end up usually taking the 89 to gigs, bigger shows I'll use both and I use a stereo output Wet Reverb
both take pedals well, I don't use the Dr Z effects loop
Two very good tube amps, and there are others but I've typed enough for now..
PS: the guitars I play now have had more of an effect on the tone I want... but as one avatar said that I like "everything matters"
So Josh these are some of the things that come to mind, oh and I've got a new Milk Man Half and half also.. I'm lucky at this stage of my life, playing a lot and like spending money on the things that make me happy. Not a bad gig
