Under Your Spell Again is typically credited to Dusty Rhodes and Buck Owens.
The song linked above was written by Billy Mize, according to the label. Published by Rapid Music.
It does NOT appear under Mize's catalog at BMI.
I'm not aware of any lawsuits.
Recorded in Southern California, likely in 1958 or earlier. The Owens recording is from June 1959.
Sounds like Ralph Mooney to me.
The singer made a small handful of other records. |

It's a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.. |

No, the B part is different than "spell". The first part sounds the same. |

Perhaps this is where the "Spell" song came from? |

I think that is highly likely.
Here's the label.
This is the same Pep label that released Buck Owens earliest recordings in 1956 and 1957. He was in and out of this studio regularly and was strongly associated with Billy Mize.
This is the same label that released the earliest version of Crazy Arms. Mooney was in and out of this studio as well.
I think this is 1958 or earlier because the city of Rivera was merged with Pico to become Pico Rivera in January of 1958. This label still says Rivera.
Martha Lou is better known as Martha Lou Gaches. Never had anything approaching a hit. Deceased in 2003.

The backgrounds are very similar, but the melody lines are quite different; one may have inspired the other. It's hard to tell because publishing and copyright dates do not indicate when the song was actually written. Labels could also lay around for a few years before they're used. |

Obvious influence there, maybe even a rewrite but it wouldn't stand up as a copyright infringement _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Harlow Dobro |

The melody on the verse was definitely the same as Under Your Spell Again but the bridge had nothing to do with it... As far as the singer goes it brings back some great memories. I worked with Martha Lou for about two years somewhere around '69 or so. She was a very hefty girl at around 325 lbs. or so and a very sweet gal.. I introduced her to her last husband (Carlys Krieger). Together they opened a booking agency. While I was with Martha we did mostly Military bases and Moose and/or Elks lodge circuit and actually made decent money. Martha was also a good song writer having written "Old Blue" for Grandpa Jones and one called "Hot Springs, Arkansas" for her home town. She also appeared regularly on the Cal's Corral TV Show..JH in Val _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Here's the flip side and a pic of Martha. She goes back to at least 1953 when she recorded with Jim DeNoone.
Appears to be an answer song to Billy Mize's "Who Will Buy The Wine", which came out in 1956.
Sounds like Ralph to me.
