I opened up my 1939 Vega Console Electric today for the first time as "full volume" with the slider volume control did not turn the volume pot (which it turns with a connected shaft) to full output volume.
And I found an original "service note" inside. 
Below are two photos, one also showing the innards.

Haha, Kirk. There seem to have been no "tomb raiders" in this lap steel. All screw heads are in great shape and it looks untampered with. The steel is all original apart from the nut, which has been replaced (it's wooden, as the original was - the original probably broke).
Below are some closer photos of the electronics for those interested. Plus one of the early humbucker (1939) with the hand rest removed.
I have cleaned the jack, maximized the volume pot "crankability" and lowered the strings. This steel sounds fantastic!
No wonder this steel is so heavy - that's a big chunk of wood!

The note inside didn't come from Howard........unless he wrote in the first 3 months of '39. He died in March.
Kirk......how are you doing with the Volcano situation? How close did it come you where you are located?

Noah - yes, I would love one of those! But finding one here in Europe is not very likely.
I noticed when looking at your site and photos that there are slight variations between models. Your 8-string has 3 legs rather than 4, different side logo and different chromed strips, and the volume slider in an "improved" position, so it's probably the version after mine.
