Hals' appears to be a double neck.. does anyone know what the story is on that one?
The links to the patents are awesome. _________________ Bo Borland

also, while we're on the subject, as richard said...i got a sound quite similar to this just using the bruce zumsteg made dobro simulator pickup which i loved...it just stuck on the neck under the strings and sounded way cool....evidently they were too much trouble for bruce to continue making around his more important zumsteel manufacturing priorities...but they produced a sound very similar...at a $100 investment...compared to $5000 for a pedabro. my pickup stopped working after a couple of years and i sent it back to bruce, but he couldn't be bothered with them anymore.....too bad!! |

I met Hal Rugg at a steel jam in Virginia that he played with the Resocasters... I was hangin' in the green room and he didn't know me from Adam, but graciously smiled and said "try it out!" as I stood drooling next to his Pedabro. He let me wank away at it for about 10 minutes... it's a memory I treasure, meeting Hal, and his generosity with his time and property.
the one he had at that time was a single neck... not the one pictured with Jeff Newman |

Paul Franklin had a cassette release a while back called "Acoustix' which featured the Pedabro.I don't know if even the steel specialty shops still have any of this recording...
His versions of Roly Poly, and Scrapple From the Apple are a knockout with that timbre... |

Dave,
I don`t think "Scrapple from the apple" are on the tape but "Donna Lee" is and what a great version.
"Acoustix" is a fantastic good tape. I wish that Paul could make a CD out of it - for better sound quality.

Paul has released the Akoostix, Just Pickin' and parts of his other albums on a 2 cd set. It's called "Looking Back", and there are some tunes from his jukebox on his website.

Carson Chamberlain's pedabro was one with both a steel neck and pedabro neck together.

The top of the pedabro looks like about 1" thick piece of solid maple! Wonder why the massive top thickness? |

Bill, maybe to give the cone a little more clearance. Just a thought. The man's a genious.

why the square bars from changer to bridge? couldn't he have just run the strings to the bridge from the changer? i'm guessing to lessen the down force on the spider. he could have raised the height of the changer so the angle wasn't so great. |

Chris,
I have one of those pickups also. I even ordered it with the preamp.

Shorter overall string length - string ball to tuning key - requires a shorter pedal stroke as well as reducing the chance for tuning problems caused by an increase in friction. That may also have solved some extraneous overtone problem. _________________ Jerry Jones |

This is an old thread but I'd thought I would add this.
Paul Franklin's pedabro on Kieth Whitley's "It Ain't Nothing" sets the bar for me. His licks are iconic and I'm sure added to the success of making it a hit song.

Since those are almost impossible to get you can buy a pedal resonator from Jimmie Hudson that is very well made or a pedal dobro from Jackson Guitars. I’ve owned both. |

All built by Hudson steel guitars.
I still build them as many as I am able to get the top wood for. Hard to get good 12 /1/4 wide flat hardwood.

I think this is Carson Chamberlain's Combo Ped-A-Bro with E9th neck referred to in the above posts.
Steel solo starts about 2:28.

Would be interesting to know if that 'combo guitar' still exists. |
