I do not use a volume pedal with lap or console like my SX 6 string or my Dual Pro but I do with the pedal steel. I cannot tell you why, but I prefer not to....that is provided there is a working volume control on the guitar.
How about you? Yes or No? Can you say why?
I searched around for a previous thread but couldn't find anything. Just basically curious.

I'm using the same chain of gear set-up for my laps as I do for pedal steel. Lately, when gigging with two lap steels (playing a 1939 Slingerland and 8-string Clinesmith Cast aluminum), the Slingerland has the old original volume pot and I don't like to mess with it: leave it full on, and use the VP. Plus I plug two guitars and a harp mic into a Morley ABC. The VP makes sure all are off when I need to tune or unplug or whatever.
When I practice on my lap at home, I just plug straight into a small amp.

| Would have clicked "sometimes" if given that choice in lieu of either yes or no. Sometimes I do, and then sometimes I don't. Hardly ever use a volume pedal if playing lap-style. Seldom when playing standing up (behind a double Deluxe34), but almost always when I play sitting down (with a double Deluxe34). And always with pedal steel. |

Probably depends on your style of music. I bought one assuming its use was normal/essential, but the more I got into Hawaiian music, it really isn't one of those things you need for most music...Jerry Byrd made it a big part of his sound though, but in general you can live without it unless you want his specific sound. If you're playing country, well I'm not an expert but it seems a lot more prevalent there.

I don't use a volume pedal at all. I play mostly in a western swing-ish style which, for me at least, doesn't seem to need it. I leave a bit of headroom on the volume knob just in case . . .
That said, every now and then at a jam, an old country tune will come up and I wish the pedal was there for those classic swells.

I put no.. I have one in my rig but I don't use it when I'm playing.. I basically just use it to mute the sound during set breaks.
