EDIT - From reading links in this thread,

My approach is similar to what Paul Franklin Sr. said.

I approach it as a machinist would approach polishing aluminum. using a polish as the final step will tell you how well your wet/dry sanding is, which is actually microscopic grinding.

As far as alternatives to aluminum for fingers - has anyone tried titanium? Of course, cost is a factor..

The bend in the string near the finger makes sense. I would either change the string more often or have the string makers consult an engineer regarding the properties of the alloys they use for their strings, or do your own research - not all alloys are the same Smile

It removes NO metal.

Respectfully - that's not technically correct.

ALL polishing removes something. Polishing is the process of smoothing the surface, which is achieved by lowering the high points. The other smoothing process would be "fill" - actually depositing metal into the low areas. And that would require polishing to smooth the entire surface.

Polishing removes either old polish, or contaminants, or waxes, dirt, schmutz (a complicated technical term for "all that other crap") - and/or metal.

If there are grooves in the finger polishing WILL remove metal to level and smooth the surface.

Some of the Jackson steel guitars have a finger system called the edge seems like a good idea they mill a small part of the finger away .

For string "zing" I just loosen the string and put a tiny piece of paper between the string and finger. Takes all of 2 minutes and works.
