Got a sweetheart deal today on a steel package with a Fessy SD-10, nice seat, and and a tweed Evans JE amp - all a little older but function great and sound even better. The guitar has got split screws on 2,4,5,6 & 9. I've never had a guitar with splits before - how do I tune them? I don't even do anything with 9 - is it there 'just in case'?

Splits are tuned in this order:
1-Tune the open note
2-Tune the raise
3-Tune the split with the appropriate pedal/lever
combination with the original lower tuning nut
4- Tune the final lower with the screw in the back of
the changer (or separate lowering rod as the
case may be).
The 9th string split screw is often used in conjunction with the 2nd string lower from D#-D-C# and the feel stop is often the 9th string kicking in from D-C# when the 2nd string hits the D note. The split screw is then utilized to bring the 9th string back up to the C# as usually it will have lowered further in order to get the 2nd string D note 1/2 stop. Often times it is recommended to rod the 9th string near the top of the bellcrank in order to get a good feel for the 2nd string 1/2 stop and adjust the 9th string return spring to your own taste in resistance for the feel or 1/2 stop.
