Eleven years ago, Jeff Au Hoy had people posting their version of Cold, Cold Heart, and it was well received.
Let's do it again, but this time with the number that made the steel guitar so popular back in the late 50s.
Let's post our versions of SLEEP WALK.
To start it off, here's Santo & Johnny's original version:-

And here's Betsy Brye's vocal version, which was released at the same time.

Personally, I love both versions, and have often thought that Betsy's version would sound even better if she had had a steel guitar in the background. I've thought of recording it myself as a vocal, with a long instrumental break in the middle on steel.

I am just learning how to play lap steel. Now don't laugh, but I have been practicing this song for about a month and I have got it pretty well under my belt. It is not the norm for Sleepwalk and includes Blue Moon halfway through. I never really noticed just how similar those 2 songs are till I learned to play this version.
Give it a try before you through your hands up and say, this is nothing like the original.........you would, however, be correct, it is nothing like Santo and Johnny's version.

I don't expect people to just copy Santo & Johnny. People should put their own style to it, as you have done. |

This was the first tune I learned on steel guitar. I learned it from memory, meaning I didn't listen to the record. There is a flaw! I'm playing the four chord as a major instead of a minor. It doesn't really bother me, but.......it can annoy the critical listener/musician. Peace!

OK guys here's mine, for what its worth.
Recorded this back in 2006, still very much in the learning phase of steel playing.
This is on an Anthony 6 string wood body "Frypan" in reso "G" tuning.

I first looked at the guitar and wondered why the jack and control were where they were, then realized you must be a cack hander. I then saw your avatar and confirmed it Mate. _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

Here's a wacky experiment that couldn't be more quick and dirty. I played the Sleepwalk melody (kind of) against the harmonies of a DADGAD acoustic guitar track I recorded a few years ago (that had nothing to do with this song).

Isn't it? When you go out on a limb, sometimes the branch breaks. The trick is to learn from your failures. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

I was lucky to meet & get to play Sleep Walk with Quilter Amps legend Pat Quilter at a NAMM Show...not the best sound with all the booths blasting around us, but a good memory anyway.

You're getting a good tone out of that Weissenborn.
A couple of years ago I played Sleep Walk at a folk club in Coventry, on a Weissenborn that I had built, but without any backing.
It didn't work very well. People were too interested in drinking and talking. Your version is much better. |

Thanks for your comments Alan. Would I be right in assuming that you are talking about Coventry in the UK? I notice from your Avatar you say you are a Brummy living in the USA. Sounds like a nice move!
