Two years ago I built a Fender D10 Stringmaster/2000 Hybrid, using parts from a 2000 which had gone beyond being restorable, and I documented the build in the Steel Guitar Forum. (See above.)
In effect, it was the D10 Stringmaster that Fender never got round to building. As you know, no Stringmasters had more than 8 strings per neck.
We recently had an earthquake, and it fell onto a concrete floor, scuffing up two of the corners, so it needs to be refinished. Also, one of the pickups is now more noisy than it was, so it needs the tender touches of someone who is familiar with Fender wiring.
If someone would like to take this project on, I'll be glad to entertain offers for it. But please don't offer me less than the value of the Fender parts I used, and don't buy it just for the parts and throw the body away. I could do that myself.
Asking $300 plus shipping. Less than that, and it's worth more for its components.

Hi Allen,
I took in a fender 2000 pedal steel basket case in a trade. If your entertaining finishing your 10 string I might have some parts that would work. Not sure which way I'm going to go on this fender 2000. Might just use the frame and bodies and rework everything. Gary. |

No, it doesn't have leg sockets or legs. The parts came off a Fender 2000 which doesn't have leg sockets. It's not a standard sized instrument, so I would have had to build a case for it. Since I've only played it at home I've never needed a case. |

That's pretty well how I got the parts. An old luthier died and his son stored all his instruments and parts in a damp basement. He was going to throw everything out but I offered him $900 for all the parts. The 2000 was part of the deal, and I had intended to restore it, but the wood was completely perished. I gave the frame away and sold the two mechanisms, then, with the remaining parts I decided to build a Stringmaster. I don't know where the bridge covers ended up. I've had my workshop turned inside out, but have no idea where they are. They'll probably turn up when I'm looking for something else. |

I was asked why I didn't specify a price. I thought I would see how much people would offer.
Since it's a Fender replica, although it's made of genuine Fender parts, I couldn't price it as though it were an original Stringmaster. In fact, nothing quite like it has been advertised for sale before, so I don't know how much to ask.
If I sold the parts separately, the tuner pads with tuners would probably get about $100 each, and the pickups about $75 each. Then there are the two Fender fingerboards and the Fender builder's plate.
*I've sold Fender bodies before, for about $50.
*I don't want to give people the idea that I dismantle perfectly good instruments for the parts. That would be vandalism. I usually restore them. I don't dismantle them unless they're completely unrestorable. I would have used genuine Fender necks, but the 10-string pans wouldn't fit, and I had to build wider necks for the 10-string fingerboards. |

I don't see any trust rods holding the two necks together. How are the two necks fastened together?

Glue. Remember that I built the body myself from scratch. Fender used truss rods because they had four sizes of neck, and the truss rods enabled them the assemble single neck, twin neck, triple neck and quadruple neck instruments from the same components, using the appropriate length of truss rods. The diamond-shaped plated brass that you see on Stringmasters was to cover the ends of the truss rods. |

Without the truss rods and diamond-shaped plates on the front gives it a nice clean look. That looks like a great train set you have in the background...

I've been a model railroader since I was a kid. That layout takes up the entire two rooms of basement under the house. |

That's just what I said I didn't want to happen.
I wouldn't dream of splitting it up for parts. Without one fret board and one pickup the rest would be junk and all the time I've put into building the body would be wasted.
If no-one wants to respray it and play it as is I shall keep it. |

Replacement fretboards are easy enough to find. I've bought several over the years via the Forum.
When I build lap steels and console steels from scratch I just make my own fretboard. I have an Excel spreadsheet that I wrote many years ago to calculate fret positions for any instrument. If anyone emails me at afbrookes@gmail.com I'll be glad to send them a copy through the internet.
Most of the instruments that I build are folk or ancient acoustic string instruments. |

Hey Gary, my recommendation would be to join (if you haven't already) the Fender Pedal Steel group on Facebook and post to it as a request...a lot of folks from that group helped me when I was getting my 400 up and running (well, up and limping anyway).

That's a really, really fair price...I would be tempted myself but I don't have the space for another guitar right now.
There's part of me that would love to turn it into my longstanding idea/dream of a doubleneck, all electric Hindustani style steel guitar...with one neck tuned to the sympathetic "taraf" like on a sitar and the main neck tuned for Indian music. I'll get around to that someday. But like I said...not a lot of appetite for another guitar taking up volume in this house, and that one is cool enough not to mess with too much, in my opinion.
