I don't remember the album title, but Lew did "The Image Of Me" session on that album (not sure if any others) and John Hughey said that was when he went to work with Twitty and John finished the album.

Lew and I both lived in Kansas City, Mo., and I first met him in late 73 when I moved to KC. Lew told me he left Twitty because he didn't want to fly. Twitty was getting booking dates that required flying.

Session info says Hughey was the only steeler on the album.

not sure I buy that. here's a quote from John himself:

Quote:
I know that Gene Jones played with Conway while they were in the army together. When Conway got out of the army, he got into the rock scene. In 1964 he went back country and Lew Houston played with him until I started with him in 1968. That's the only players that I know of that played with Conway. Any others would have only sit in or played with him locally in Oklahoma City.
John Hughey

I was thinking it didn't sound like John, although I'm not super familiar with him....or Lew for that matter.

My long time friend Jim Florence, RIP, was stationed in OKC during this time and played the same venues that Lew and John did. This was in the days when steel players did not share their tuning's let alone let you look under their steel. Jim told me that Lew had a different kind of tuning and thought it was when you let off the pedals it pulled the strings. So it was tuned in E with pedals down. Does anyone have more knowledge of this? Thanks, J.R.

Lew played at several of the Southeast Steel Guitar Association shows in the '90 s.
He was an amazing player to watch, and listen to !
