Billy had just recorded the Steel Guitar Magic album and told me that he wished he and Barney had been given more time to rehearse by Jack de Mello, because they would have liked to produce more tightly integrated duets like those of Jules Ah See and Joe Custino.

I find it hard to believe that recording could have been better...but that's quite a thought.

I've been listening to that recording so long - one of my favorites.

Smile Whoa!
Lets not all forget that Hal Smith provided these tapes of his conversations with Billy. Mahalo, Hal. Hal is a good friend and has other interesting taped conversations of which I have copies.

I was listening to one of the Hawaii Calls albums last night (Hawaiian Strings I think) and I thought, the arrangements seemed a bit more "orchestrated" in ways. Whereas the overall feel I get from Steel Guitar Magic is that they were doing more improvising, jamming, etc. It feels more open and free like you just walked in on a kanikapila of a bunch of supremely talented folks...maybe that's the silver lining of them not getting enough time to rehearse!

I think you're onto something - there is a little bit of a loose feel, in a good way, on the Billy/Barney recording.

It's part of the charm.

Very Happy Once again,-- Thanks to Hal for a long delayed "Thank You". He provided the original BHL tapes quite a while ago.

Sad What happened to the photo of Hal Smith at the Queen Kapiolani that I posted a day or so ago?. Hal furnished the BHL tapes. And a lot of HSGA members attended many HSGA conventions at the Queen. Very Happy [img]

Andy. We are very grateful for the opportunity to listen to these tapes, a great piece of history bought into our homes.
Thanks again for a valuable insight to Billy's tunings and explanations.

You're welcome, Jim, I was happy to make them available again but thanks is most deserved by Billy (who freely shared his music and aloha spirit), Hal Smith (who had the foresight to create the recordings and the generosity to share them), and Chuck Wilson (who listened to all the material, cleaned up audio quality where possible and transferred everything to a digital format).

Andy, what would you think about them being uploaded/hosted at the Internet Archive? Not sure if there are any intellectual property issues involved...but for ease of sharing last year I uploaded the "Tapa Room Tapes" (Jules Ah See et al) there and that works as a very nice place to allow streaming and downloading... Just a thought though. Thanks again!

Unfortunately I missed the deadline for downloading this. Can anyone else send me a link that contains the Billy Hew Len Archives of Hal Smith?

Thanks in advance,
Ron

The archive is now uploaded to archive.org. Here is a temporary link: https://archive.org/details/LenThree03

I need to change the metadata so it's properly searchable but don't have time right now to figure that out so the above link will get you there for now.
