Those of us who are lucky enough to receive Bobbe Seymour's electronic newsletters will have received his latest issue, in which he raises the issue of 'steel guitar myths'. Part of the content deals with tone. I know that this has been covered a thousand and one times on this forum, but what he was trying to say in essence is that a great pedal steel guitar's tone comes from the sum of its parts.
Whether the end product of tone is obtained by way of chance or fluke, or by deliberate and scientific research, a great sounding guitar is what we all strive to possess. Certainly he makes the point that the pickup plays a small part in the overall picture, and maintains that no matter how good a pickup is, it can never make an inherently poor sounding guitar sound great.
While he is never short of an opinion or two, Bobbe does consistently write very articulate, thought-provoking and relevant articles. For those of you who haven't signed up already to Bobbe's newsletter - you are missing out.

Bobby's a gem and I appreciate the time he takes to write his newsletters, it's a bright spot in my e-mail "in box".

I made a point this time, of telling Bobbe how outstanding his articles have/are becoming as time goes by! I thought this most recent “Bobbe’s Tips” was one of his best and most sincere! Keep them coming Bobbe!

I receive so much junk email during the week that seeing Bobbe's Tips and Nashville News is a welcome sight. The latest one about myths was fantastic. Come on Bobbe, we all know that the black steels sound better. Just kidding. It is unbelieveable that someone would think the color would affect the tone but I guess there are some who feel that way. |

If you think the color of the PSG affects it's tone, then go buy a sodium vapor street lamp and use it to illuminate the studio. Everything will look orange.
Or get a color wheel lamp and the colors will be constantly changing
Bobbe, the tips are wonderful.[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 02 September 2005 at 07:51 AM.] |

Ok, I'm convinced that color does not make a steel sound better or worse, but what color thumb pick sounds best?

I thought "black ones sound best" was a toungue-in-cheek reference to Emmons guitars.

I think that Bobbe is one of the "best" pro musicians around and I hang on his every word; so lucky that he does what he does. |
