Fantastic sounding Zum S12 in beautiful green lacquer and rope.
6x5 late 70’s all pull.

VIDEO LINKS LOWER IN THE THREAD.
Good to hear how wonderful this Steel sounds.

This stunning Zum has some notoriety for its look, but it is one of the best sounding steels you will ever hear. There seems to be a sustain motor running at all times. Like a good PP, it sings back to you, from your first open chord to the soaring 24th fret. The old SC pickup is sassy and sweet at 22k ohms.

The chrome legs are new, made from lighter weight material.
The case is a new high end Dell, with casters on the bottom to save your back.
The pouch is also new and in fine condition.

Lots of upgrades here, ready for hard gigging, or to simply adorn your music room.

Recently set up by the inimitable Jim Palenscar.

A quote from our local steel guru,
“I wouldn’t sell that if I were you.”
“Why not?”
“Because you can’t build a steel guitar that sounds that good.”

The coped is Ext E9 and Uni.
It can be strung as either Uni or Ext E9. I’ve been playing it as an 11 string without the low B. I love having the big E triad on the bottom with the D accessible by pedals.
I can restring for you as well.

Coped:

Tuned high to low:
F#,D#,G#,E,B,G#,F#,E,B,G#,E,(B)

ABC standard Emmons. (B pedal raises all 3 G#s to A)
LKL raises 4/8 to F.
Vertical lowers 5 to Bb.
LKR lowers 4/8 to Eb.
RKL raises 1/7 to G# with feel stop at G, and raises 2 to E.
RKR lowers Str 2 to D and C#, and lowers Str 6 to F#.

Pedal 4 lowers G#s to G nat, for Eminor.
(Pedal 5 and 6 are standard Uni.)
Pedal 5 Str 7 lower to F.
Pedal 6 Str 8 lower to D, Str 4 raise to F.

These last 2 give you the strummable diminished and Dom7b9 chords.

Price is $3300 plus shipping. OBO.

And now the photos. Thanks for looking.

BTW, the cabinet drop is very low on this 12 string.

For those concerned about it, the cents are:
E’s with AB pedals down...-3.5.
With A/F engaged, Str 3 -2.0 Str 6 is 0.0!
With BC engaged, Str 7 is -4.0. Str 3/6 lower together-1.0.

This is great for intonation.

Thanks, John

John, a friend of mine has a same-vintage 12-string Zum like yours, in a kind of butterscotch color. I nearly bought it. These models are older (the placement of the small logotype indicates that), and the changer is 3+2, as you can see in one of your pics. I rely on the fuller 3+3 changer of later guitars. The tone on his is wonderful, I imagine this one sounds great, too.

Great deal for someone. John McDuffie, where are you, man?

Hi John, thanks for the big thumbs up.
The tone and sustain of this Zumsteel beat any all pull guitar I have played.

Don’t know why these older Zums sound so exceptional, but they do.

As shown in the photo, the changer is triple raise/double lower. That is plenty for most people. 6x5 is a well loaded guitar. For those that want more, there are options.

There are good reasons why Zumsteels sell for such a premium. If you look around the forum you will see some very pricey guitars. This is a quality guitar priced to sell. Perfect for a newbie 12 stringer or experienced pro who knows the value and dependability of these instruments.

Here is the first of some short video links on Vimeo.
Good to hear the tone of the steel.
This is an improv based on the chords to Little Wing.

John, this is a beautiful guitar.
Does it have tunable splits in the changer? I can't tell from the photos, and from what I understand, '82 is about the time these were added to the Zums. Thanks.

I have a split on string 5 with pedal A and the vertical giving me an Aminor chord. I’m not sure how Jim Palenscar did this. It is at +6 cents which is about where I tune minor thirds.
I don’t see a row of split screws. But Jim made it work.

String 6 is splitting with the G# to F# lever/ B pedal for a G natural. This one has not been tuned. Since I have a pedal that lowers the G#s to G for Eminor, I wasn’t concerned with the intonation on that split.

You may be correct on the Zumsteel history of split screws. That is a good question for Zumsteel enthusiasts here on the forum.
