Topic: You have $2500 and want to move up to a D-10 - Suggestions? |

So, I love my little Stage One. It's been just wonderful.
But after 2 years (1 year, serious) of playing it, I find myself with a hankering to move up to a D-10. I guess it happens to most of us. I've spent some time with a C6 8string lap steel, so it won't be TOTALLY foreign for me.
So.....let's say I can raise $2500 total, including selling the Stage One. What would you buy?
My preferences:
Used......I don't want to take the instant deprecation once I buy a new one.
Must be giggable, professionally. I don't play steel a lot yet, live.....but I'm working pro musician, so everything I own has to be able to be used, reliably, live.
Weight......not my first concern, and it doesn't have to be a featherweight, but this won't just be staying at home in one spot.
More "vintage" sounding........this is more of a nebulous preference, I guess. I've found my taste in PSG sounds to be more 60's and early 70's. It's probably mostly the amplification and pickup choice, but I find a lot of modern steel to be too sterile, smooth and slick for my taste.
So.....what would you be looking at?
Suggestions?

There's three Carters currently listed here on the forum that meet your price. I think they would be a good starting point.

| There are several to consider that are on the FOR SALE page of the forum right now. I'd recommend checking out any MCI, MSA, BMI, Carter, and certain Sho~Buds that appear, as these brands will be the most likely to be in your price range. |

That's exactly what I paid for my Carter 5x8 D10. I couldn't be happier.

Yip, any good known brand will work, lots of honeys on the sale board, make sure it’s not dart board Sam on the under carriage and has the hardware you need. As far as vintage tone that was mostly the recording’s back then.

Jim, while you are thinking about this, you could go to Greg Cutshaw's page on "getting C6th sounds on E9th"

You will find lots of things to keep you busy there.
Or get an 8string lap steel tuned to C6th, that might be all you ever need. |

My GFI Ultra has been everything I've needed in a pedal steel for eleven years so far. Very high-quality for the cost... and quite lightweight, so great for a 'road steel'. $2500 should get you a great used D-10.
Also, the GFI Expo series should be along the same caliber, but I haven't personally owned one. Mike Sigler had this one up for sale recently:

BTW, I appreciate all the nice messages from folks with steels to sell, but this was just a “planning for the future†idea. I would need to sell my Stage One and at least one other armpit guitar to afford it. Might be a while.
