Just got a beard pbs m solid mahogany reso.
Anybody else have one of these, or played one?
I listened to one on you tube and thought it
sounded real good. Will the mahogany be
brighter or more mellow than the pbs D maple?
I need a decent capo, what is a good one that
don't cost a rediculous amount? Thanks
Terry

First of all, they aren’t Beard guitars, they are Gold Tone guitars built in China, and designed by Paul Beard.

Of the ones I have played that are the solid wood models, I would say the mahogany model is a little more “mellow” than the maple. The maple is a bit brighter - maybe a little more “in your face.”

There aren’t any cheap dobro capos that are worth a damn. It’s a tiny cottage industry in America in comparison to standard guitar capos. Spend the dough now and be done with it. Charlie’s Slide Pro Capo is the best one out there in terms of “floating” capos. The Beard Wave capo is pretty good as well. The old brass Beard capo that is no longer available can usually be had on the used market pretty cheaply. But the Wave capo is a dramatic improvement over the old brass job. As goes the saying: You only cry once when you buy quality.

So .... From the conversation I'm assuming the Shubb Reso Capo isn't good? It's only $32. I was going to get a Shubb just because I use their banjo capos and they have worked fine for me.

Thanks

The Shubb is a quirky capo because it doesn't fit well on all squareneck guitars (without modification).

Outside of the Charlie & Beard capos I can't think of anything I'd recommend. A slight edge to the Charlie but the Beard is fine and less expensive.

I have a Beard Gold Tone PBS M Solid Mahogany Dobro and I like it a lot. I've never owned a really expensive Dobro and someday I hope to get one, but I don't really feel out of place when I'm jamming with other Dobro players that have more expensive instruments. Mahogany does sound more mellow than Maple and won't cut through the mix as well, but,IMHO, sounds better for ballads. I have a Beard Wave capo and a Walworth Reso-Guitar Capo. I like them both equally. The Walworth is a bit cheaper. Elderly sells them for $50. I've seen Rob Ickes use them. It seems that the general consensus for capos is Charlie's Slide Pro Capo. I've never used one but they get great reviews and I'll probably pick one up someday.

I'd go with the Beard capo for a less-experienced player, although I prefer the Charlie.

As far as sound - you can Google "tonewoods" and easily find the info you are looking for, But FWIW maple is harder than mahogany and the resulting tone brighter than a similar instrument built of mahogany.

The only exceptions would involve some types of laminated construction, odd construction or instruments that are badly built

Well, I ordered the Charlie's capo and think
I'll like it very much. I'm not an experienced
dobro player, I'd say bout midway between
a beginner an intermediate. I sold my Rob Ickes
model after not playin it for bout 3 years. Got
the itch again and bought this beard. So it's
almost like starting over again. Stupid decisions
I make ! At least I'll have a great capo when I
get good enough to use it ! 🙄
