I tried to learn the Flying Home head today. Im not sure if its all correct but I had fun and plan to transcribe some of the Benny Goodman's stuff.
Let me know what you think and don't be shy to tell which parts I got wrong or sound bad. Thanks!

I play that song regularly at gigs
We do it in Eb
In general I try it every spot on the neck I can think of before deciding on what sounds I like.
I end up in the 4 and 5 chord positions for the most of it.
I use less bar movement on the quick lick at 9 and 10 sec.
And slide only a 1/2 step into it. It allows more time for the 3rd note to ring before repeating it. Not sure if that is exactly right but I like it!

Thanks for the reply Mark! I ended up sliding just a half step to the third also yesterday for the same reason!
Do you have a video of you playing it? Do you play a lot of Goodman’s stuff?

We do A Smooth One and then Air Mail Special at a ridiculously fast tempo....it is fun to play though
No videos......maybe one of these days

Pee Wee King did a good version with Roy Ayres and Bobby Koefer on twin steels.
65 or more years ago.

My band does Til Tom Special and 7 come 11 from the Goodman songbook. I play Airmail Special on guitar and mandolin, but haven't really worked it up on steel yet. Flying Home sounds like a good one to work on too.

I've always loved the A part of the Flying Home head. I haven't ever learned the whole tune, but I've been known to drop a few bars of it into a solo from time to time. Always great to see when someone in the audience recognizes the riff.

One of the classic swing heads, of course. Nice swing feeling in your playing. I would suggest that pick blocking would add an additional layer of crispness that would help us feel the rests even more. Easy for me to say, right?
