I'm going to look at trading my Deluxe Reverb for a Twin Reverb today (both RIs). He wants something smaller and quieter, and I of course am looking at using the Twin for pedal steel.
My question is, how hard is it to swap in a 15" speaker? I've read this is ideal in Twin Reverbs (and I think just in general). I am by no means and amp tech, and unfortunately I don't know any good ones. Granted I've done speaker swaps before, but never when I had to change the size. So are there any walkthroughs online? Or maybe one of you gents would be so kind as to provide one?
Is it worth the hassle?
Any specific 15" speaker recommendations for PSG?

| I have two RI's and have put 15" speakers in both. It was relatively easy to do. Remove the baffle and use the dimensions to cut a new one. Lay it in place inside the amp and position the new speaker on it, making sure everything is clear, and trace around it including screw positions. Cut a hole, wrap the new baffle in grille clothe, mount the speaker and put it in. I used cabinet grade birch plywood. |

Because I'm getting a straight-up trade for this one. If it's close to the same condition as my DR, I feel like that's a no-brainer.

Are you sure you prefer a 15? That was the standard for steel guitar for many years, but 12s have been making a come back.

No, I'm not sure, and it's definitely possible I stay with 12s. My ear for tone isn't super picky anyways, so I may well leave the 12s in.

The real hard work is removing the 2-12 baffle, as it was probably rabbeted and glued in when they made the cabinet. If it is, you'll need to flush-cut out the whole baffle, or cut out the center of the baffle, and then wiggle/pull/pry each side out separately. Fill and glue the rabbet cavities, and then add cleats on the sides and bottom to support a new (temporarily mounted) baffle board. Lay the amp down on it's face and then carefully place the 15" speaker where you get the most/best clearance for the output transformer. Mark the mounting holes and then you can remove the baffle and cut the big hole and proceed with the rest of the task of reassembly.
It's not a job for the faint of heart.  |

Give the 12's a try and see how you like them...
Bill Moore..I'm also using an EV SRO in a Ken Fox cab and it sounds terrific.... with a '69 Dual Showman Reverb..

You could leave the 12s in and get a nice 15" cabinet built for a single 4 ohm speaker (Tommy Huff type of cab). You could plug it into the main output. You'd be able to keep the amp stock, have a 15" speaker option and have a spare cabinet for other amps that will come along.

Oh cool! I knew that some newer Fenders had rabbeted/glued boards, but I've never worked on a RI Twin. If they're screwed in, that makes the job a piece of cake. I've only done one that was rabbeted, and it was a royal pain to get the old board out. |

I think the brand and sound of the speaker is more important than the size. For instance I would rather have 2 x 12 JBLs than a 1 X 15 Eminence Legend. I put a 1 x 15 Altec 418b in my Twin, because I got a good deal on it, but would have been just as happy with 2 x 12 Altecs.
That being said, a few years ago Mojotone quoted me $90 to make a 1 x 15 baffle for my Twin complete with the grille cloth of my choice. It cost me almost that much to make my own. I would definitely contact them if that's the way you want to go.

I would go with the Mojotone offers as mentioned by Tim.
It's baltic birch, already cut to clear the tranny and comes with grill cloth.
When all is said and done, buying the wood and the cloth not to mention the work and possible driving around to source the materials, the under $100 panel delivered to your door is a good deal.
Save your original baffle/speakers for returning the amp to stock.
If weight is your concern, the neo speakers will give you useable tone with less weight.
