Weber's California 12 has been one of the most popular in the 6-string world for years. Similar clean tones, headroom with much better power handling. It's also available with a paper dust cap option that can alleviate the harsh treble JBL's produce in some amps.
I prefer them to JBL's myself because of the power handling - original, non-reconed D120's handle around 40 watts of clean signal due to aging (originally they were 60 watt speakers - not 100 as sometimes mistakenly thought) and any distortion at all has an effect that reduces that figure. Even in 2x12 applications, if an amp is going to be run very loud two original D120's can be a bit shaky (and I've sent enough out for reconing to know).
Google the subject to JBL substitutes and you'll find countless discussions on guitar forums. Most other companies make good high power/high sensitivity/high headroom speakers suitable as D120 replacements.

| I found I really liked the Weber NeoMags as much or more than my JBLs. They had the tight bass and shimmering top end like the JBL but the midrange was sweeter. Unfortunately they are no longer available. If you see them used - buy them! |

I think you can still order Neomags from Weber - they make a bunch of things not listed on the site, plus I've had them custom-make a few speakers overt the years withe various combinations of cones, magnet type/weight etc.
