Does anybody know if the stock Sperzel tuning machines on my early D-10 Zum can be replaced with Grover 210C tuners? I was hoping for a direct fit?

Hi Karl. I asked this same question here a few years ago. According to Carter expert John Fabian, probably the keyhead would have to be modified.

I subsequently sold the guitar and did not pursue the issue further. Perhaps someone else has.

Here's a link to the discussion from 2008: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=135791&highlight=sperzel

NO, the Grover 210s have a smaller shaft diameter than the Sperzels . The key head shaft HOLE is too big. Been here done this...

You can check the dimensions of each on the specific websites.

Sperzel tuners are great! Why do you want to change them?

Thanks Tony and Jerry! John, the tuners are very stiff. I had the same tuners on an MSA Classic SS that I bought new, and I didn't like them then for the same reason. However, it looks like I'm going to have to live with them! Thanks again guys! Very Happy

Karl, here's another discussion concerning servicing these Sperzel tuners and some ideas from others.

Longer thread here covers some other brands too. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=318231&highlight=tight+tuners
