Thanks, Pete!

So I have a question which I've wondered about for a long time. In the solo, at 1:47-1:48 in this YouTube, there is a pedals-down lick that very obviously has the bar covering the lower strings, but leaves the 4th string to ring open. He adds in that 4th string three times: on beats 3 and 4, then beat 2 of the next measure.

There are only two easy ways to do that in G#. Either Rusty had the steel tuned down a half-step, or more likely, the engineer slowed down the tape a half-step (they recorded in A, Rusty did the lick at 12th fret with AB down, but the tape was slowed to G#). Producers used to do that kind of thing quite a bit. Do you know about this? I guess he could have done it in G# with the open 4th along with E-lower lever... but that's a little awkward thing to come up with. But then, we're talking Rusty Young, so that might be how he did it.

Hey Tucker, check out this discussion I had with Frank Freniere awhile ago. I don't think we ever got a definite answer on why but I know I was a bit baffled tabbing things out in Ab(G#) and Frank is right about that cool unison sound in A.

Thanks, Jeff.

Revisiting this lick a bit on my steel, I retract my earlier comments that he could have done the lick in G# with the E-lower; it woudn't work because he bounces between the 8th and 4th string... the 8th would have to un-lowered, while the 4th was lowered. He didn't wire his lever that way.

So, I'm back to the "engineer slowed the tape" theory. It's far-fetched that he would tune his entire steel down a half-step just to make one lick work out. Also, if you're familiar with what their vocals normally sound like, this sounds slowed; compare the harmony parts on say, Pickin' Up the Pieces to those same voices on this recording.

Does anybody know Rusty? Can they ask him?

This is some of the music I grew up on, and while, at the time, I had no idea what a pedal steel guitar was, the sound always stuck with me and no doubt was a big influence in my deciding to learn to play pedal steel in my 50's. Thanks!

I added some basic pedal/lever combo's to make it very easy to play along Smile
I basically pick string groups 8,6,5, or, 6,5,4, or 5,4,3 when playing along.

This helped me out a bunch. Figured I would contribute to the discussion. Great song! Love Rusty's playing.
