Started building an 8-string console steel for myself almost a year ago, but never finished it (too much other stuff going on in my life...) - till today! It's finally done:
Already used it at my band's rehearsal today, and love the tone; it sounds much fuller and warmer than my Fender 400 (which I use without pedals), but not as in-your-face gritty as my Lollar Chicago equipped other homemade lap steel and my early '50s Supro Supreme; sustains a lot longer than the others, too - most likely because of that aluminium base plate that the nut, bridge, and string ends are anchored in.
Actually, the tone reminds me a bit of clips I've heard of old Bigsby steels, and of those awesom Clinesmith versions (never had a chance to play either of those myself...).
BTW, the legs are from a Deluxe 34 stand - actually, the whole stand is screwed to the baseplate (though eventually I want to get leg sockets and mount those).
Oh, and the color scheme was inspired by my love for old woody wagons...

| It's a Lace Alumitone - and older model that didn't have the wiring for splitting the coils yet, can't remember the exact model name, but it should be similar to the model that is now called "Tone Bar 8". |

That's the aluminium baseplate, painted with primer...
Just to clarify - that's not my woody (I wished it was...) - just one of the pics that inspired my color/wood scheme for this build! |
