Thanks Joachim, that is so great, I love Dickey, think I'll go put on my John Hughey signed 'Highway Call' CD to keep the mood. _________________ Regards, Craig

Looks like the video was from 2001, so the year after Dickey was kicked out of the Allman Brothers.
Sure sounded good - and I don't believe I've ever heard Elizabeth Reed with a sax - nice. _________________ Mark |

The sax player is Kris Jensen and he appeared on "Let's Get Together" indeed released in 2001. He's the second person from left.

Joachim, love it... great stuff! I like Dickey Betts, and that is one of my favorites.
During my college years I shared an apartment with another guitar player, a good friend and band mate. We saw Sky-Dog and Dickey up close at Pittsburgh's Syria Mosque in 1971. It led to a lot of "study breaks" practicing two-guitar moving harmonies. My interest in pedal steel guitar followed from that.
Appropriate that Dickey would hang out with Les Paul. According to the folklore Duane and Dickey's beloved Les Paul guitars had a reserved seat when the band traveled by air.
A story I heard about the song title was... the "sisters and brothers" were wandering about in a cemetery, where Dickey took notice of a grave stone inscribed "IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH REED." Urban myth? |

All true as far as I know, Dan. The actual "Elizabeth Reed" gravestone is in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon GA. Duane Allman and Berry Oakley are also buried there.
Dickey supposedly enjoyed writing in the quiet of the cemetery.
Elizabeth Jones Reed was married to Mr. Briggs Napier. No connection to anyone in the Allman Brothers but Dickey saw the gravestone and decided that would be the title.
The urban legends go from there...was it really about a former girlfriend of Boz Scaggs that Dickey had an affair with? We'll probably never know.

Jeff, thanks for closing the loop on that. Been on my mind for so many years now (don't wanna count 'em, ha!).
"C'mon down to Macon... we'll ride you on our motors, and feed ya' some down-home collard greens."
