I just found this clip from 1983... I think, looking at the other band members... from a "Texas Connection" show that we recorded at KUT studios, the same room we used to record "Austin City Limits" and other shows of that type. TNN wanted to feature Texas artists in that series.

Anyway, it was 35 years ago. I had big hair, and more chins than the Shanghai phone book.

Why we like steel guitar with our music.

There were even some major sevenths in there. Cool clip.

You've aged well, Herb.
Heard a little of the "Amazing Two Finger Three String One Pick Whatever It Was" Weldon & Hal business...
Pretty dang cool... see ya in a couple days.

Great ears, Skipster! 😎

The opening riff is Hal/Weldon, then it morphed (I think) into my own version of basic kinetic riffing on the mid-strings with occasional forays into s.4 and s.1.

Speed picking is basically a kinetic exercise, wouldn't you say? That is, the picker is relying on positions and known, muscle-memorized, hand movements; rather than being aware of every note being played and with the ability to instantly call them off by name.

Flurries of eighth notes are combinations of 3-3-2, 2-3-3, 3-2-3, with appropriate rests, of course. So the ability to arbitrarily access any of those combinations at your hand's command, with the number of accompanying bar movements at the correct positions at your memory's fingertips and hand/eye muscle response time will determine what kind of a speed demon you are; the "orange blossom specialists" (e.g. Jernigan, Sigler, Stewart, Reid, et al.) have this impressive talent.

I'm constantly hearing solos I recorded back in the 70s and 80s that, not only can I no longer play them, I'm not sure how I ever comprehended them in the first place. Laughing
