I think I'm driving myself to an early (well maybe not THAT early,,LOL) grave,,,,I keep getting a sound I can't decribe,,,not exactly a rattle...or a chime/echo or maybe "thin"??,,on all strings,,but especially on higher strings. Almost like unison strings on a mandolin. I've tried various amps and settings. I've heard the term microphonic used in regards to tubes and pick ups. This pick up is probably 35 years old,,,,could it need re magnetizing or ????

Wish I could describe the sound but ????

I had that once and somebody told me to try a drop of oil on the roller. Worked for me.

Thanks Paul,,,this is on all strings,,,,new strings,,,nut roller maintained, changer surfaces have been dressed (no grooves!)

What are some issues,,,if ANY,,with the pick up that could cause problems?

Not likely it is a magnetism issue. If it is microphonic it will make considerable noise when you tap or rub it (I have one I can order a beer through).

I had this happen to a pickup. As I understand it, over time, the windings in the pickup can develop some slack. Their slight movement can cause the pickup to act like a microphone....aka "microphonic." I have no idea if this is the problem Sonny is experiencing, but if your pickup is microphonic, one simple solution is "potting". Basically, the pickup is dipped in a hot paraffin bath. Lots of DIY instructions for this on the web. Worked for me.....

Are you sure it's not something in the amp?

There are times when the strings between the roller nut and the tuners can sympathetically vibrate creating an unwanted harmonic. JayDee adds a bit of shrink tubing on that part of string #'s 5 and 6 for that reason.

Try this, turn your amp up and talk into the pickup with the volume pedal at near max. You should be able to hear you voice if it's microphonic. You may also get a piercing feedback in some cases.

Hey Jim thanks!!! This is a Kline with about 1/2" between the nut and tuners,,LOL But,,,in your expert opinion could the volume pedal (pot) possibly cause this distortion or,,,like a real thin rattle or vibration,,,wish I could describe it,,,other than IRRITATING!!!!,,,LOL
