Can't believe this is the first time I've ever heard this song by the great Johnny Paycheck with the title of my hometown. Amazing vocals as always but anyone know who played all that beautiful steel throughout the entire song?

It says right on the page you link to that it's Lloyd Green.

Have not heard that song but I like it!

Well duh! Oh Well

I was listening to it on my phone and didn't click the drop down menu with the credits listed. Definitely heard some Lloyd licks in there but wasn't sure. Thanks Don for pointing that out.

David, hopefully your address in Lake Charles is not the same one he was headed to in the song! Wink

Early in this century they carried out executions in Lake Charles. I think the last was in the 30's and included a woman who occasionally makes the rounds with various authors. It was long rumored the old jail was haunted with the souls of the condemned and her ghost was the primary ghoul. They eventually decommission that jail in early 90's, tore it down and built the current parish court house. I assume the ghosts left with the jail as there hasn't been any ghost tales since.

The state executions were moved to Angola state penitentiary decades ago. I'm sure there are other cities named Lake charles but I'm not familiar with them. The "Band" also made a song referencing Lake Charles, "Cripple Creek" and a few other songs that mentioned our city over the years but I wonder as well if Johnny was referring to our city. Winking

Many of you know this but Johnny was a steeler himself, he played some for Buck Owens and others. I don't know how good he was at steel but he was a great musician, particularly vocalist. Unfortunately his voice changed coincidentally with him growing a mustache and beard. His early vocals on the Lil Darling label are some of the best ever as were his songwriting skills.

I worked at Bobbe Seymore's Steel Guitar World when he worked for Johnny.
I always looked forward to the board tapes that Bobbe would bring back from the road.
Johnny's song "The Old Violin" is the one I remember the most: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9Cn5u01teE
Bobbe's style of steel playing was perfect for Johnny's material.
I don't know who played steel on this cut.

There seems to be an "Alumni" at Angola that were or later became very famous musicians and sidemen. Aaron Neville, Freddy Fender,Charles Neville. Interesting to me that so many excellent musicians seem to come Mississippi and Louisiana area..... something in the water over there?
