Well dang. I’d sure like to see that “auto-change” guitar too. Very interesting post, Andy.

Roland was an incredibly gifted individual. I am blown away every time I listen to this guy. So many have simply been forgotten. Yep, that's quite a stand!

I liked the "organ-electric guitar" with the curtain in the front. Very Happy

In the old days, bigger was better ! Would need a crew to move off of the stage Very Happy
My stand is likely from the 40s. Got it from LT Zinn, and did some mods on it...

built in amplification.

I agree that the style is not to my liking but it was how singers use to sing with vibrato on every note like a bleating lamb.

For me vibrato overused is one of my pet hates with singers and steel guitars alike. I prefer straight clean notes and vibrato only used for accenting emotion once in a while.

But hey I appreciate what the norm used to be.

That reminds me of someone's joke proposal to tune all necks of a triple or quad neck to the same tuning, and then jump back and forth between them for showmanship. I didn't pay too much attention, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing just that! Great technique and lots of slants....

It's been said that Leon McClauliffe did that, he had two necks tuned the same. I guess it would be handy if you broke a string. Very Happy

Just heard this on youtube, Felix Mendelssohn's Hawaiian Serenaders.
I have an album that my dad brought back for me from England many years ago.
Great cover and some really cool show style hawaiian music.
No longer have the vinyl record, but lucky to have it on my iTunes from when I had a turntable that could convert to digital.
Bet some of you will like this;

Here is the record that my dad brought for me. Looks to still be available.
He also told me we had a relative, a cousin I think who may have played steel guitar with this group.
His first name was Leon but he reversed it to Noel Something for his professional music career. Last name may have been Robinson or Kaufman or something else???
Maybe Basil or one of the other English steelers would know more about him? Shocked
