That's a great photo.
I suspect there are many newbies who have no knowledge of Winnie Winston. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

Thanks b0b, I'll check out the bear site. Only Winnie I know is from the classic book we all have. Bear records is a fine company. Did Winnie play lap steel as well? _________________ Derby SD10, Peavey Session 400 |

David - Try to find an old publication by Bill Keith and Winnie Winston, called Pedal Steel Guitar...by Oak Publications. It was published in the 1970s and was the "bible" for pedal steel guitarists. There is lots of good information in that book.
You can probably find it on Amazon. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

I’d love to hear this too. I wonder if the tunes are originals or covers? No matter, his take on anything will be an original.
I am a new player, but I bought “The Book†35 years ago by mistake when I bought my Stringmaster D8 (thinking there was little difference between lap and pedal steel!...duh), which weirdly enough has the same note name fret markings up and down the neck as the triple neck in the background of that album cover photo. That must have been a thing. |

Thanks for posting Bob. I was friends with his brother Rick, who lived here in VT. Rick ran a artsie movie theater in my town. I had the pleasure of meeting Winnie at Scotties convention, and coincidently sat together with him on a flight back to LGA from same. I stayed in touch a bit and was dismayed when he died a relatively young guy from cancer. Of course i had "the book" and really credit it with getting me started in the right direction. I believe Winnie recorded his record "Steel Wool" at Philo records in Charlotte VT with my band mate, and keyboardist extraordinaire, Chuck Eller, engineering. In any case Winnie was a steel guitar pioneer up there with best. |

CD just arrived. 27 songs and a 32-page booklet by Hank Davis. The booklet is mostly a biography - lots of things I never knew about Winnie, and pictures.
Winnie was a good player, even on these early tracks. I regret that I never got to meet him. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

I'm getting out of the CD business at SteelGuitarShopper.com, Michael. I have too many unsold CDs in stock, and almost nobody buys CDs anymore. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Thanks for the reply, b0b. I suppose that I'm disappointed but not really surprised. In all the years that I have been a member here I have bought only about half a dozen or so CDs from you which I imagine is typical. I guess that I should look and see if there are any more I need before they all disappear. _________________ "For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert." -- Arthur C. Clarke |

b0b is joining a lot of other outlets that are starting to clear out their inventory of CDs and ending carrying them at all. Most sales now are online downloads, other than the storage space on the server. pretty clean operation.
b0b, you may want to make a list of what you have left on the Forum. You might be able to get rid of some inventory. Just my 2 cents. |

Thanks, b0b, for this notice about the Winnie Winston CD. I ordered it today and am looking forward to hearing these tracks.
Besides the wonderful instruction book he wrote with Bill Keith, back in the '70s he impressed me with the session work he did on a Lew London tunes including:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4vNKbiwqEk
His break from 0:59 to 1:30 is a great example of playing western swing on an E9th-based 12 string tuning.
I also remember Winnie performing an exceptional version of Ashokan Farewell at ISGC (but don't remember the year). |

b0b. I soon return to the USA and will buy some of your CDS . I am a dinosaur and proud if it.
I have one of Winnie's recordings with a booklet. Perhaps the recording was black vinyl. Steve t |
