I was familiar with the video of Sol playing here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb0A2RLE32U

But I ran across this today (which may have been posted here before, I'm a newbie, but I couldn't find it after searching):
http://www.angryjim.com/jimsoldrecords/?p=2844

Digitized records featuring Sol Ho'opi'i playing classic hymns with vibraphone and organ. Given the rather absent state of older hymns in, well, my church, and probably many others, it's kind of nice hearing these old hymns again. Especially from one of the preeminent masters of steel guitar.

I always thought this was a great deal. I need to do it myself sometime.

As Sol was under the influence of a religious cult and nearly (if not totally) blind by that time, I wholeheartedly agree with Mike's assessment.

I can never get past the first minute of any one of those songs. The memory of Sol in his swinging prime is too strong.

Thank you Nic for posting that link. I'm a big fan of the old style music and that is great music.

There's nothing wrong with playing hymns. They can be comforting and most people need that. Sol plays them with genuine feeling and his own great style. I had seen the two videos but didn't know he was a member of Aimee McPherson's church, which I had thought from what little I knew might have been a cult, but reading about her in Wikipedia and elsewhere, it looks like she could have been the real thing, though a flawed human being. John Updike in a New Yorker article quoted her as saying to people on a hushed dance floor in a speakeasy in New York:

"Behind all these beautiful clothes, behind these good times, in the midst of your lovely buildings and shops and pleasures, there is another life. There is something on the other side. “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” With all your getting and playing and good times, do not forget you have a Lord. Take Him into your hearts."

You don't see Tammy Bakker or Benny Hinn types getting away with that.

I’m sorry, I completely missed the fact that this is a different set of recordings than the private Bud Tutmarc recordings. I am not familiar with this set and it looks somewhat appealing.

I would call the Tutmarc collection for diehard fans only—it contains some pretty sad moments that I wish I never heard. Sol is my hero, so I don’t take it lightly.

I'm not acquainted with the Tutmarc collection personally so I don't have a baseline to judge them against. Maybe they were from later as his health started to fail? I've heard he lost his sight, a very difficult thing for a steel guitarist particularly, to part with.

It's not the thirties Sol-with-afterburner-engaged to be sure. Simple slow chord changes and the accompaniment of vibes and organ is interesting and reminds me of my grandmother (my uncles tell me that he visited their Nazarene church way back in the day in southern CA). But I'm not enough of a veteran steel guitarist to find a lot of flaws in his playing from what I've heard of these (I will for my own sake avoid the Tutmarc ones!).

Edit: Circa 1941, I missed that. These are possibly significantly earlier than the private recordings...
