I'm looking at buying a pedal steel from somebody here on the forum. I've copied the string gauges (and notes) from his post below.



I notice that the 3 string is smaller gauge (presumably a higher note) than the 1 & 2 strings.

Is this normal for an E9 guitar?

I feel so ignorant. guess I'll never learn this any younger.

My Carter D10 uses a .011R for the 3rd string

Yes, that's correct. Strings 1 & 2 are known as the "chromatic" strings (debatable terminology but that's not really important).

The top four strings are scale notes of the E scale. In ascending order of pitch:

String 2 -- D#
String 4 -- E
String 1 -- F#
String 3 -- G#

This arrangement allows scale phrases to be played alternating thumb and finger among these strings (with variations from pedal/lever changes).

I use the same gauges except for strings 3 & 9. I use a .012 and .034W instead.
