I bought this Rickenbacher Academy about 15 years ago as a body only. It had no electronics, pickup or tuners. The bakelite was very worn on the upper bouts, and looked very splotchy. I decided to make covers out of koa with the shape inspired by the B6 Bakelite to hide the worn areas. In an attempt to add some thickness to the body I made a back cover out of rosewood (shielded) with binding on the edges. I just installed the new Golden Age tuners yesterday, but have yet to shape the edges of the tuner strips to fit the peg head a little better. At the moment I have a Blue Fender Lace Sensor Tele bridge pickup in it, but that may change at some point. I love the size of this guitar. It will fit in a violin case.

Beautiful job, Steve! Too big for a violin case, but a viola case will work. I've read that a uke case might work too. I just shifted some of the supports in this viola case:

Here is a picture of the case I have been using.
Perhaps it is for a viola, not sure.
It fits like a glove, though.

Thanks Andy! Not sure you would classify this as a restoration, but I enjoy it a lot. It definitely looks better than when I got it.

Excellent work. The Academy and the Ace are my favorite models. Both made from one piece of Bakelite.

Thanks, Ron! I like these steels, too. I have seen a few examples of these called American Academy. Looks just like the Academy except for the name on the headstock. Not sure if these were before the Academy or just before the transition to the Ace name.
