| Agreed, bOb. Those kunaki prices are quite low. Back when I was talking to Ron and Rebecca, though, I recall the price-per-unit was much higher and the popular places had packages that gave you 300 or 500 CDs. Maybe the old saying, "it takes money to make money," is relevant here. |

| I rarely buy a CD anymore. Most of my music listening is on YouTube and Apple Music. I do have about 4500 steel and classic country songs on all my digital devices from my previous collections. However Apple Music now covers most of those and I can listen on my phone, in the car, through my stereo, even my watch and when needed can burn a CD for others. I say release it on digital format then it will be available to the masses. |

The problem is it is not ours to reissue. . It is a real tragedy. That Black album is the template.

Bill you are correct.
We must keep in mind that Ron Jr. perhaps does not own the Publishing/Licensing rights and that can be overwhelming . There are several "standards" on the LP which must be licensed .

Greensleeves and Danny Boy are public domain. 7 of the songs are Buddy's originals (Emmons Publishing Co. BMI). That leaves Night Life (publisher not listed on record).

We'll have to ask John Sebastian, Jim. Maybe he knows. Fred Neil and Tim Hardin could have easily had a hand in writing this as it was close to their style.

Pretty brief drift: 2 posts: Jim C.'s about Sportin' Life and Joachim's reply. Otherwise, up to and including Barry's post concerning the publishing rights to Night Life, everything posted related to the possibility of a Black Album CD reissue.
Are no side notes in a topic acceptable at all?

More like a lawyer's "cease and desist" letter. I doubt very highly if there's enough money anywhere in this deal for a lawsuit to be instigated.

The LP label credits Night Life as "P. Buskirk, W. Breeland, W. Buskirk, M. Mathews" but doesn't list a publisher. I wonder if any royalties were actually paid in the initial release. Ed Hamilton's liner notes credit Willie Nelson.

The earliest 1960 recording of the song shows Reeny Rhythms as publisher.
No mention of Pamper, but it is a "Prescription For Happy Times".
That's by Paul Buskirk with "Hugh Nelson" on the vocal. I think that was to get around Willie's recording contract with Pappy Daily at the time, 1960. Maybe Reeny was Buskirk's company? Willie had sold the song to him as Daily didn't like it.
Sold virtually nothing, but apparently it generated enough interest to get Pamper to acquire it.
The same master was reissued in 1963 under the name "Willie Nelson", showing both Reeny Rhythms and Pamper. I'm guessing this was an attempt to capitalize on whatever noise the Ray Price version was then making.
W. Buskirk isn't mentioned on either of these singles. Presumably a relative of Paul's, but I have no idea how that name would get on the song.
Breeland rings a bell with me, but I can't recall Mathews. Paul Buskirk cronies?

It seems to me that the publishing rights to the songs are relevant to the topic. If we could determine the total cost of a reissue including publishing rights, maybe we could make an offer to (who?) for the master tapes.
How many steel players would buy a CD? How about a vinyl LP with a digital download card included? New LPs are going in the $20-$30 price range now. New CDs are more like $10, but they're much cheaper to make.

Sometimes I think that I play Greensleeves and Danny Boy pretty well, and than I play these songs from the Black Album and it puts me with 2 feet on the floor again. There's still a lifetime of practice ahead of me....

For some reason, I never got The Black album. I'd probably buy the CD or maybe the LP. No digital formats for me. I like something I can pop in a player or on a turntable.
No digital devices, phones etc. in my near future. |
