Here's a video of me playing with myself on Josef Zawinul's Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. I think I'll be playing this one until I'm in my grave, trying to learn how to play a good solo on it. One of the simplest and most difficult tunes to blow on. This is simply how I practice playing over tunes. Lots of clams, some good ideas, some poorly executed good ones, and just a good way to hear where things have a tendency to go and how I can change that. 100% improv.

I am going to start working on a book that has been on my mind for a long time--I've had the title and concept for years: Sixths Sense. This is a pretty good example of where the book will go.

Great old tune and you did it nice.
Some of those simple tunes are hard to improve on and to come up with something new that fits???
Was a favorite of mine back then and I guess it still is.
Your getting that nice tone for the tune too.
You know there's no girl, in the whole world, that can love me like she do!

That book sounds like a nice idea too.

Thanks for the comments. Maybe the 'playing with myself' title came off as a cheap joke and put off some people. I would hope not, though.
Playing a tune from start to finish with extended improvising is fatiguing. So, I try to practice that way so I can build a stamina for gigging longer.
Also, I record myself practicing often so I have a record of some cool idea that I can work with later. Once I'm more comfortable with a tune, I start doing little takes like this to see if it works artistically, what I can do to spice up the arrangement, etc. Even though I've been playing this tune for a few years, I'm still finding ways to play it better, at least the melody. Now to work on soloing better.

Nice work as always Mike.
I too really enjoy playing that tune--I use Band in a Box--and have had a hard time coming up with a solo that I'm satisfied with.
I've played it with my brother-in-law on sax and it seems like all his solos are great. Frustrating.

At first I thought you had a pedal on the sixth string, but it was the loop that started to come in. I always liked that number. First I heard it by the Buckinghams as a teenager. I like yur playing! Is that a Peavey Delta Blues amp on the right side?

Great playing Mike.
Can also serve as a primer for those learning to pick-block with a thumbpick and how to mute out lower strings using the side of your thumb.

Mike, have you ever tried a Boss multi effects pedal.
The BOSS ME25 offer all the popular Boss pedals, like a loop etc and dang they sound spot on. You can pick it up for less than 100 and we can also trade different jazz and steel settings I have been working on quietly.
