It's not just the brand and depends what type of amp it is going into. In my twin I have 25 watt green back Celestions. In my Deluxe reverb I have a 50 watt Weber. Also own two pairs of Telonics 15s and 12s.
I used to be be a die hard JBL fan but don't like to buy the re-cones or 30 - 40 year old speakers.
New speakers are better than old worn out speakers as a rule. |

I pulled a D120F out of my Deluxe Reverb and put a Telonics 12†neo in it. I am very happy with the resulting tone and headroom. |
I believe the Telonics 12" neo is ~ 2db LESS efficient than a D120F . How does this improve headroom? Tone, of course, is totally subjective. _________________ Emmons & Peavey |

I think there was a slight headroom hit. 2dB hit you say? Yeah, I believe it. I’m still happy with it. I’m not pushing the amp that hard anymore. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

The power handling of the JBL D series was much lower than most people think - see the actual data/app bulletin.
If the low heat dissipation of the voice coil didn't fry it, it was not uncommon to rub or even jump out of the magnet gap. Hence, the development of the D130F and finally, the K130 with the Kapton high heat dissipation voice coil and imroved gap clearance.
