For the steel (and acoustic electric guitar), I use a very transparent maxon compressor for some single note type leads. It sounds pretty nice.
For electric strat, I use an old boss CS-2. It colors the sound in a pleasing way,(but not good for my steel)
Do you use one for your steel, either as a single effect, or part of a multi-effect unit?

Sometimes an Xotic SP - but not for compression. I use it for sustain only and maintain full attack. It has a very useful blend control.

I can't stand the "squash" of a stompbox (or cheap rack mount - as opposed to studio-qualiity units) compressor on any instrument except electric 12-string.

I use a "BOSS LMB-3 Bass Limiter/Enhancer" as permanent part of my set-up, where it acts as buffer - sustainer - eq - pre-amp, followed by a low-ohm (50K) VP. In most situations that is all the gear I have/need/use, in addition to cables and power-amp.

The LMB-3 is the only stomp-box size "compressor" I so far have found suitable for PSG.
