I'm curious what the consensus is on this.

As if you were adding these changes incrementally to your guitar, rank your E9th tuning copedent changes from being (1) most important to (10) least important of the levers and pedals you use.

Here is mine:

1. E lever
2. A pedal
3. B pedal
4. F lever
5. D lever
6. C pedal
7. G lever (raising F#s a half step. If lever supports 3 pulls, then raising F#S a whole step with feel stop to half step raise by raising D# a half step)
8. Up lever lowering Bs to Bb
9. X pedal lowering G# string 3 a half step and lowering G# string 6 a whole step

Thanks guys and gals!

You should really define what you mean by those levers. Apart from the ABC pedals, there are probably at least 2 variations for each of the levers as to what they might do depending on who you talk to.

The great thing about standards is that there are always so many to choose from.

If you really do mean incrementally then for me it would be...

1 pedal that combines traditional A&B pedals.
2 Split the above into traditional A and B pedals
3 Lever to raise Es (F lever?????)
4 Lever to lower Es (E lever?????)
5 Lever to lower D# to D and low D to C# (D lever?????)
6 C pedal
7 Lever to raise 1&2 (to match 3&4) and lower 6th to F# (Ideally raising 1st string to G when half engaged).
8 Lever (vertical) to lower high B a semitone. (X lever?????)

Apart from the last bit in brackets on 7, that's what I have right now and I don't think my brain would cope with more.

1. A, B, C have equal importance
2. E's to D#
3. E's to F
4. F# on string one to G#, 2 D# to E, and most importantly string 6 G# to F#.
5. String 2 lower to D and C#, string 9 to C#
6. Both F#'s to G

Most important? For me, these are my priorities:

Pedals A & B.

Raising the Fs.

Lowering the Bs.

Pedal C.

Lowering 2 and 9.

Lowering the Es.

Finally - raising 1,2 and 7 (my LKV - my least-used pull).

I also like raising 6 a whole step but that, too, is an occasional requirement.

I'm sure he meant to add: "...in my opinion." Smile

I'd want the B-Bb lower before the E-lower - we already have that note on our second string.

You do realize this thread is only one step removed from "what's the best way to tune a steel?"

thank god for the fluff ! Very Happy

For me, I can live without lowering 5+10 a half step . But all that other fluff has equal rank in equality.

I think Paul and Tony pretty much hit on what Jeff Newman was saying in his E9th Chord Dictionary Video when he said with 3 pedals and 3 knees, you can get just about any chord you want.

I like the "fluff" too, but you can do some serious stuff with just the above.
