Maybe GD will chime in here. I asked him once about changes in his combo amps (pre- and power, not speaker combo) and here is what he replied:
"Differences between the old and new? Dang it, I'd like to say dramatic but then my pants would light on fire. But everyone knows, "black sounds better!".
Truth is, my tonal circuitry has changed very little over the last 20 somethin' years. Some of the features have improved though (the effects loop for one)."
But Black did not "replace" the Gold face, just became an option, albeit popular enough to have almost replaced it.
He did ask me if my amp had the two large knobs - EFX and MASTER, which the Black Faces all have I think, and later Gold Faces, like this one:
I guess there was an earlier version with a different knob setup - like this one here (a preamp):
I don't know what the differences are beyond just the knob setup.
I hope that helps! _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |
