Another vote for the Paloma ceramic bar here. Very light and smooth and has a bullet nose just like a regular steel bar. Not as cheap as a broom handle maybe, but an affordable and well crafted device.

It's nice to have a Paloma bar around. The price has always been great, and the company owner is a friend of Steel players, and all around nice guy and a good western swing guitarist.
fwiw, I just did a side by side comparison with my Paloma Bar and a John Pierce Cryogenic.
I would say you still have to use some Blocking technique with a Paloma bar. It sustains for at least a 6 count, which is shorter then the John Pierce but not anywhere near a broom handle.
I was using the song Blue Spanish Eyes for the test.
