looking for any information on a steel player by the name of don kates. i took lessons from Don in the 80's
he lived in northern Illinois. he played one of the first J.C.H d-10 8+8 also, played banjo . great guy
i lost touch with him in the mid 90's trying to locate
him...

Don lived in Champaign for a little while before he moved to Chicago. He was playing an MSA back then. I haven't heard his name in a long time. He was a nice guy and a great player. Hopefully we'll find out what he's been up to.

thanks bob,
i first saw don play in bensville Illinois at a club
called Nashville north. he knock me out with his E9th and C6th playing and yes he was playing a msa d-10 vintage XL. the next week i bought a msa d-10 classic
loved the guitar wish i had it back Confused . hope, we here more about him...

I had big shoes to fill when I took over for Don in a local band back in the 80s. People requested William Tell Overture for years! I just found him on Facebook and sent him a friend request. He still lives in Chicago.

wow dyke,
thanks for the info.i used to see don all the time up here playing in north Chicago and kenosha Wisconsin.
gave me a lot of lessons. besides him the only other steel player was T.C Furlong of jump in the saddle band.hope don will get in touch with you and me
