Gerald-Using my E6(C#min7) tuning back in the old Alvino Rey days,I always played "Paradise Isle" in C.

It seemed to be right to get that nice slide up and still not run out of frets on the bottom, 1 and 3. I had a Hawaiian Trio in 1938 and played a lot of clubs in Cleveland and that one was one of my favorites, I did use a Rocco Tone Expressor volume pedal , tone and volume. The same as our Jody Carver used back in the old days.ahhh memories....al.SmileSmile

Hi Al,

Great looking D-8 you have there.
Here's a photo of my Vega 7 stringer. I have only seen others with 6 strings in this model. The 7's must have been available only through special order.

Hi Derrick, Thanks, that was my bread and butter guitar for several years with time out for the Army in WWII. I was just going to Audition for Spade Cooley with it when I got drafted.

That's a nice little Vega you got there, is the tone control out front on it.?...al.SmileSmile

Hi Al,

They have the tone control on the inside (players side). I snatched this one up a year ago on E-bay for only $186.00. The seller had only one picture, and it was so small, you could't see how many strings the guitar had. I used a magnifying glass and noticed the 7 tuners.

Bill Creller did an excellent job going through the guitar for me and building a case for it. Very Happy

Hi Derrick, you got a deal on that one. 7 strings yet. Lucky you. the reason whey I asked about the tone control is out front I would wrap my little finger around it to get the talking sort of like Alvino Rey did, and the Boo wahhh. It was very handy there....al.SmileSmile

Having just landed on the album being much discussed earlier in this thread (Hawaii Calls, Hawaiian Shores), I'm just going to go out on the limb and say I don't at all mind the pinky swells on the first (assumedly Barney Isaacs) section. From reading the comments I was expecting the absolute worst but then I pulled up the track and it was actually...quite lovely. Not subtle, but I always thought Paradise Isle was that tune where you went for non-subtle with the volume swell effect...

Jules coming in in the last third, great stuff.

I'd be learning this tune but unless someone comes along with a C6/B11/A6 arrangement, I can't justify introducing another new tuning at this stage in my steel infancy!
