A few years ago I asked on the forum who played steel on this song since it is a Barbara Mandrell recording. It is so clean and smooth and the tone is tremendous. I commented how awesome it was but never knew who played on it. To my surprise John Hughey commented "Thanks Paul, that was me". Wow, not only a super picker but he was a first class man as well. I got to meet him at the Texas show and he was always so kind and willing to answer questions. If you ever saw John Hughey play at a steel show, you never walked away disappointed. |

Good question and impossible to answer. Conway's many, many albums with Hughey is one of the greatest runs in music history and a treasure trove of everything is great about Country Music. The contrast of John Hughey (hot) and either Grady Martin or Pete Wade (cool) tells the story in every song. Classic country songwriting plus Conway's vocals and his role as the one being cheated upon or the one cheating (and very guilty about it) is "how you tell a stranger about Country Music." Also Conway is one of the greatest cover artists ever and all of these covers and other obscure album cuts feature the best playing and singing from Conway & Company.
From 1971 here is "I Love You More In Memory" but there's 20 more just as great.
