Here is an arrangement of Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz that I recorded today. Not a complete take, just a demo with a head and solo.
I record these demos for my band to check out so they can hear the feel I'm looking for. It's also a good way for me to find out if an idea works. If I have to shoehorn it too much, it's not going to work.
I feel very at home in this kind of music: soul, blues, jazz. I try not to think too much when I play it--if you can hear me thinking, I'm doing it wrong.

Very cool, Mike. I've always loved that tune. I don't want to drop too big of a spoiler here, so let me just say - the second half did me in. Great idea!

Cool version, Mike. Rather than Byrd's wah sound, reminds me of Cootie Williams plunger mute work.

Bob, wah pedals are very personal things. I used to take mine apart and adjust it to work at the frequencies I wanted by unhooking the potentiometer from the pedal and turning the pot til I found the sweet spot.
I don't even own a wah now, but my Digitech RP1000 has 3 wahs--I use the Cry baby setting.
Andy, definitely wanted to make it like a plunger sound. I don't use the wah enough to be really good at it, but it's not an exact science anyway.

Fantastic Mike.
My favorite version, the version I first heard back in the early 70's was Roland Kirk's version from Bright Moments. it is the version I always think of as the definitive version, but your version is right up there.

I would add that the wah sound can get old really fast unless used with taste and expression the way Mike does.

Mike I love it.
Only criticisms is the bass and drums aren't locked in the groove.
Needs a live Drummer when I hear this I think D'angelo but the drums and bass to get that sex feeling have to be super subtle but locked in and the drums need to have a stronger kick and bass needs more presence. Think Questlove locked but simple patterns.
I think it is so close to the groove that the tweak will come with a real band. I'm excited.

The drums are just a generic 6/8 loop with a couple of fills. What I'm playing on bass has the hits and stuff in it, but it was just live from my mind to my fingers, so not a lot of planning. The whole thing is pretty nondescript, though I think the solo was pretty inspired. And yes, I love playing with others more than anything. I usually have a very clear idea of what I want, but real drummers and bassists add a dimension to it that always excites me.
