A non member friend of mine has this Guitar. Quirious to find out what it may be worth. Looking for any info that might help him sell it at a fair price.
Thank you in advance,
Jimmie

Fender 800, now the most sought-after model of the pre-Sho-Bud models. There are legions of 400 models (S-8); 1000s (D-8); and even the 2000 D-10s in all their unspeakable heaviness (~100 lbs.) compared to 800s. 800s are the most desirable and least populous of the 4 models. (There are also earlier-version 400s and 1000s, but no 800s in that 1957-63 era.)
This one is missing two original pedals (and mute, lever and cover), and someone has added a homemade knee lever, fairly neat-looking as those things go. The serial number suggests late 1973/early 1974.
Fenders have a distinctly historical character (Bakersfield, Sneaky Pete) that's not a one-sound-fits-all solution in the 21st century.
Value $1000 give or take a coupla hundred, depending on condition, case (I'm currently trying to find a functional surrogate), etc.
That'll have to do until a certified expert chimes in. |

I’d agree with Ben on everything except maybe it being the most desirable. Iï¸ think silver frame 1000sare becoming the most difficult to find and most desirable. But maybe that’s just because Iï¸ want one so bad. In any case, nice guitar! _________________ Mostly Pre-1970 guitars. |

Thanks for the info. I talked to him, and he said the cover and a bar are in the case.
He will sell it for $1000.00 + shipping. _________________ Sierra 14 string E69, Nashville 400, Nashville 112, MB-200/ MB 500 Tommy Huff 1-15 Cab. |

And FWIW serial numbers are completely irrelevant. The follow no logical order and absolutely no chronological one - there have even been duplicates.
The only way to very generally date them is by features and finish colors. Pot codes are useless as the 1-meg pots used in them were purchased in only a few specific years.
And as dates make zero difference in pricing it doesn’t matter anyway.
By the late 60’s few were being made - most sold in the 70’s were made in the late 60’s or very early 70’s.
I agree with comments regarding desirability as well. 800’s are the second least polpular model behind the “rent an engine hoist†2000. 400’s - especially earlier long-scale models - are the most popular by far. _________________ No chops, but great tone

Additional note to my one above -
My "least popular" reference does NOT mean it's not an ultra-cool, very playable instrument - just that most Fender hunters are "technical cripples" like me or others looking for 8 strings.
heck, If I had any clue what to do with the 2 extra strings I'd be interested!

I had Fender 800 , it was my very first pedal steel guitar, and it had 6 pedals and no knee levers, and pedals looked just like the ones on this guitar except for the 4th pedal which looks little narrower then other three, and it don't appear to be hooked up at all...other than that I believe that this guitar to be 100% all original , and worth $1000 any day of the week... _________________ https://steelguitarsonline.com/ |

Some of our friends here might disagree, but if it isn't selling, its priced too high.. I sold one of these to a forum friend , in pristine, almost unplayed condition, with 6 pedals, and all the original mute parts intact and in good shape, which seem to be missing on this guitar, and I sold it for $850 about 2 years ago..
The old Fenders are cool guitars, but most guys won't pay too much for them, as they are heavy and tend to be fooling around pedal steels, not main gigging guitars.
... I would ask about $750 for this guitar, maybe $800 and it will sell more quickly.. Quality wise, yes,its worth $1000, but these generally are not easy to sell unless you really make it worth a buyers while.. I have sold 3 of them over the years, and they just aren't highly sought by most serious players. Your friend might do a little better on ebay, but the fees are a killer. I would ask a few hundred less, and it will move.... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I don't recall - but did you show it on the Facebook Fender Pedal Steel Page? You'd stand a much better chance of selling it there IMO. Many of the guys have spare parts so It can be made more usable. I'm tempted myself but the time required is a concern.
Plus the shipping to the west coast would be astronomical. _________________ No chops, but great tone

And I'm the guy that bought it from Bob - thanks, Bob. I agree on the pricing - that's the unfortunate story. I'd have been happy to pay more if the market was higher, but that's just the reality for these.
These are killer-sounding and playing guitars, and I beg to differ from some of the arguments for 50s 400s. I believe that for a typical pedal steel player who wants the old-school Fender sound, these are the ultimate old-school Fender pedal steel.
I know this is off-topic, but since the guitar is now sold: Jim - I wish you'd push things back to the old Fender pedal steel site - it's still there, but totally inactive. I joined it just about when you moved things to f'book. I, and I expect many others, f'in' hate f'book. I really think forums are a much better venue for this type of discussion than f'book. |
